About the artwork

In the words of the artist:

When I was a student at the university, I lived close to the Temppeliaukio church in Helsinki. I like the brick houses in Töölö, and the weird ufo-like church roof. I was married in this church. After the ceremony, when we stepped outside, we were greeted not only by our own guests, but also by two busloads of tourists who were cheering and taking pictures. The poster is painted by hand with gouache paints in full size, just like the vintage posters. I wanted to see if I could create an image without Photoshop editing.

Surely travel posters can’t simply remain a cry from the past?

Absolutely not. We live in a completely visual world where the picture is stronger than ever. That’s why the following question hit us: How would contemporary artists depict Finland of today?

We could not let that thought go, so since 2016 we continuously arrange international travel poster contests and we’ve also asked specific graphic designers and artists to create new Finnish travel posters for us.

So now Finland once again attracts travellers with glamour and cries of joy from paradise.
With the help of the travel poster!
