Yrjö Saarinen

1899–1958

Yrjö Saarinen

The self-taught painter Yrjö Saarinen started his career as a painter of signs as well as a decorative painter in Jyväskylä, some 350 kilometres north of Helsinki. During the 1920s, he moved to the city of Hyvinkää.

From the mid-1930s, Saarinen participated actively in joint exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Yrjö Saarinen is known for his use of strong colours, bright landscapes and erotic female figures. The latter sparked a great deal of discussion at the time.

Two years before his death, Yrjö Saarinen was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal for his artistic endeavours.
