How could one tempt the boldest travelers to Finland? The answer was that we had to offer something that no other place could. As a result, the advertising people in Hull, England, came up with the brilliant slogan: Finland – Off the Beaten Track. In other words, Finland was described as a country that the […]

The German illustrator, glass artist and professor Alfred Mahlau (1894-1967) surely had an idea about what the Europeans wanted from Finland. In this poster it is obvious: We will lure them in with pristine nature – and a sense of design. Note that Alfred knew this already back in 1929.

Ilmari Sysimetsä’s Olympics poster featuring Paavo Nurmi – the Flying Finn – is most likely the most famous Finnish poster ever. The poster is also a great example of recycling. For the Olympic Games which were to take place in 1940 a big travel poster contest was held. The price was shared by three contestants, […]

The ship Bore (later Bore I) is – to out it simply – a legend. She was built in 1898 in Denmark and delivered to the company Bore in Turku (Åbo) in Finland. She served the route Turku-Mariehamn-Stockholm but was lost already in 1899 after running aground. But, Bore wouldn’t be Bore if she hadn’t […]

Take a deep breath. Because now we have reached the very essence of these cheerful greetings from Finland. We’re talking about this masterpiece by Helge Mether-Borgström’s, where a ship sails into the land of thousand lakes from the west. So simple, but oh how mesmerizing. Mether-Borgström isn’t any old graphic designer. It was he who […]

Erik Bruun (born 1926) is a merry rascal whom everyone gets along with. He is the grand old man of poster art in Finland and the question is if anyone else has done more than he has to attract travelers to Finland. In Bruun’s posters one can always sense his typical tongue in cheek attitude, […]

In 1930 the artist duo Gunnar Forsström and Göran Hongell captured the maritime Helsinki with the Cathedral in the background. Both posters were published in several different languages, at least German, Finnish, Swedish, English and French. Who said Finland wasn’t international already back then? This thing about the Helsinki Cathedral is by the way quite […]

The route to/from Estonia was already popular in the 1930s, and the competition was just as tough as it is today. Aegna (at that stage without a proper name) was launched in Kiel in 1904. She served, as Adler, the Hamburg-Amerika line for many years, except during WW I. Later she was sold to a […]

The artist presents her art work: In my search for inspiration for my Vaasa poster I went for a walk in the town. Down by Korsholmanpuistikko, passing by the orthodox church on my way to the boardwalk. From there I walked back up to the main square along Hovioikeudenpuistikko. On my walk I took photos […]

In the words of the artist: When I was a student at the university, I lived close to the Temppeliaukio church in Helsinki. I like the brick houses in Töölö, and the weird ufo-like church roof. I was married in this church. After the ceremony, when we stepped outside, we were greeted not only by […]

5th place: Finnish Travel Poster of the Year 2017! The artist presents his artwork: When I designed the poster I wanted to create a set of shapes and colors that represent different contrasts that you can find in Finland. Blue triangles representing the water, green triangles representing the forests, white triangles representing the snow and […]

In this poster the glorious (international) travelers are just arriving to the hotel at Pallastunturi. Strangely enough the poster doesn’t reveal that they still have an hour or so in the bus before they reach the hotel. Well, what the heck, that’s only a detail… What was new to the poster art of the 1950’s […]

The artist presents her art work: Working with posters was a new adventure to me! The inspiration for the two posters designed for Come to Finland came from daily walks in Helsinki and walking trips to nature. The special colours of Finland always amazes me. Let it be summer with the bright lights or winter […]

Surely travel posters can’t simply remain a cry from the past? Absolutely not. We live in a completely visual world where the picture is stronger than ever. That’s why the following question hit us: How would contemporary artists depict Finland of today? We could not let that thought go, so since 2016 we continuously arrange […]
